The Forum of Chairmen of Boards of Health Parastatals in Nigeria has appealed to medical directors and consultants in Nigeria’s medical parastatals to manage the recent suspension of the residency practice in Nigeria and the subsequent sack of resident doctors in a way that would reduce the suffering of Nigerians seeking medical attention.

Rising from an emergency meeting in Abuja yesterday, the forum’s chairman and vice-chairman, Col. Austin Akobundu (rtd) and Alhaji Ramalan Yero (Dawakin Zazzau), respectively, said the forum critically evaluated the consequences of the government action and unanimously decided to mediate in the crisis.

As a first step, it said it had set up a committee, headed by the chairman, Col. Austin Akobundu to meet with the minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu to explore ways of resolving the lingering issues in the overall interest of the country.

It also resolved to interface with the leadership of the Nigerian Medical association (NMA) and other relevant associations to fashion out an enduring solution to issues of strikes in the medical parastatals and their attendant dire consequences.

On the Ebola Virus Disease, the forum commended President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and the minster of Health, for the prompt response to the threat of the virus and called for more positive actions
