Governor Ibrahim Gaidam has declared a state of emergency in the Ministry of Health and by extension Yobe State Hospital Management Board due to deteriorating condition of service in the sector.
Gaidam who made the declaration shortly after unscheduled visit yesterday in General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital, Damaturu said he was disappointed and embarrassed by the condition he found.
“It’s unfortunate that despite these abnormalities no one reported them to me,” he said. He said it is the responsibility of the ministry to check all the lapses in the hospital and report to the appropriate quaters. “Mine is just to come and ensure that what have been approved in the files is fully implemented. “In this case, we have to overhaul the management staff renovate the entire structures,” he said.
The governor also found a foul play in the supply of two brand new X-ray machines in the hospital, saying that only one was supplied instead of two.
“I approved for two brand new x-ray machines, the mobile one is new and the other one was the old one they refurbished, which has been there for the past 30 years,” he said.
He directed the SSG to provide a 500kva generator to the hospital to ensure uninterrupted power supply and facilitate the construction new borehole in the hospital for water supply.
Gaidam assured that the a committee would be set up to look in the bill of quantity for the hospital renovation submitted to him last week.
He inspected the newly constructed 200-bed capacity hospital in Damaturu and assured of equipping it soon with modern facilities.
