The Guild of Medical Directors on Saturday pledged to make Nigerians to understand what the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was all about.
The new Chairman of the association in Abuja, Dr Ejike Oji, told the News Agency of Nigeria that “one of the strategies is to make sure that every Nigerian understands what health insurance is all about so as to buy into it.
“We will make sure we work with the National Health Insurance Scheme to bring up more strategies to attain its global ideal.
“National health insurance is a scheme that is supposed to make every Nigerian contribute so that there will be large volume of money flowing into the health care system.
“It is like saving money to treat people when they are sick at any point in time.
“It is the best way to help the poor get good health care regardless of their social status’’, he said.
Oji added that with proper enlightenment, government could rapidly achieve the national health coverage.
He said that there was need to put quality service delivery in place.
Oji said some of the challenges members of the association complained about was insufficient fund.
The chairman said the association would ensure that members got adequate skills to deliver quality health service.
Dr Tony Phillip, the National President of the association, called for increased awareness on the importance of national health coverage.
He said doctors ought to be actively involved in ensuring the success of the NHIS.
Phillip said the only way to curb medical tourism was to give Nigerian doctors requisite support, including funding and creating enabling environment for them to work.
