Health workers in Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, EKSUTH, Ado-Ekiti, have threatened to down tools due to unpaid wages by the state government.

The workers, under the aegis of Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, in a letter to the state house of assembly said that its members last received their salaries in June 2014 because the government refused to release the monthly subvention of EKSUTH for July and August 2014.

The letter was signed by the Chairman, National Union of Allied Health Practitioners, NUAHP, Ekiti state branch, Mr Kunle Esan; Chairman of National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, Ekiti state branch, Mr. Samuel Adegbuyi, and Chairman of Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, MHWUN, Ekiti state branch, Mr Sunday Olajide, and their respective secretaries.

According to the union’s statement, “This is happening at a time when the health workers are expected at their duty posts even in the face of the fear of Ebola Virus disease that has quietly found its way into the country.

“This has made it impossible for the workers to be paid their salaries for the months of July and August 2014.

“We will not be able to guarantee industrial harmony in EKSUTH, Ado-Ekiti if its subventions for the months of July and August 2014 are not paid by Wednesday September 3, 2014.”
The union however said that its members who last received their salaries in the month of June 2014 spend money personally for protection and prevention of Ebola disease in their work places.

“All efforts to get government to respond positively have been met with frivolous excuses and indefinite promises,” the statement added.
