The Health and Managed Care Association of Nigeria and the Healthcare Providers Association of Nigeria have set up a joint committee to self-regulate the National Health Insurance Scheme.
The two bodies made this known in a statement on Monday.
They observed that the accredited health maintenance organisations had not been given the free hand to operate.
They also attributed the inefficiency of the scheme to low public awareness and the weakness of the existing law regulating it.
They said, "The Act 35 of 1999 does not make the scheme compulsory for all employers of labour and all residence as obtainable in other parts of the world where universal health coverage has been achieved.
"There is also lack of standard regulatory and enforcement procedure and instrument by the National Health Insurance Scheme."
