THE Imo State University Teaching Hospital (IMSUTH), Orlu, at the weekend graduated 56 medical students. It is the sixth batch of graduands from the institution.
Some of the graduating students spent more than eight years to complete their seven–year training programme owing to the school’s alleged inability to meet the necessary criteria set by the regulatory bodies.
At the swearing–in/induction ceremony, Imo State Governor, Mr. Rochas Okorocha, charged medical doctors and researchers to deepen their search and experiments in order to find a vaccine and cure for the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), ravaging some African countries.
He stressed the need for research and sundry efforts in this direction to be hastened in order to halt more deaths as a result of the ailment.
Okorocha who congratulated the graduating students, offered a N100, 000 reward to the overall best graduating student, Dr. Olaedo Marcellina Izuagba, as well as promised her automatic employment upon completion of her Housemanship programme.
He said his government had provided necessary equipment to hospitals in the state since it came to power in 2011, and would not relent in equipping more hospitals, urged the new doctors to contribute their best to their profession.
Chief Medical Director of the institution, Dr. Frederick Anolue, disclosed that some medical equipment such as Protuex digital X- ray, Flourascop, computerised tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), would soon be operational in the institution.
He disclosed plans by the institution to develop centres of excellence in minimal access surgery, neuro-surgery and radiology, urging the state government to provide more tools for the use by staff, who just completed their training in Germany, South Africa and India.
He said the approval and payment of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) and Consolidated Medical Workers Salary Structure (CONMESS) have put smiles on the faces of medical staff of the institution.
