Caffeine: Another food compound to avoid in overdoses is caffeine. Regular consumption of more than one cup of coffee or other caffeine products per day increases markers of inflammation. Besides causing inflammation, these products also cause restless sleeping and affect the adrenals.
Injected meat: Another food product that has very high omega-6-fatty acid levels is meats that are produced commercially and fed with grains. These animals have very high levels of saturated fats due to the injection of hormones and administration of chemically treated grains or foods that make them grow faster. Thus, it is always advisable to have more of meat from organic grass-fed animals than commercially produced ones.
Common cooking oils: Vegetable cooking oils commonly used at home and restaurants, when used in large quantities, promote inflammatory reactions due to the presence of very high omega-6-fatty acids. On the other hand, the level of omega-3 fats in these products is extremely low. Hence, increased oil intake can contribute to inflammatory responses in the body, particularly when associated with a sedentary lifestyle.
Trans fats: Products high in trans fats are common causes of inflammation. The primary health risks associated with their increased consumption are coronary heart disease, cancer and Type-2 diabetes. They are commonly found in fast foods and fried foods.
Red meat: Red meat, when eaten in extreme excesses, can increase chances of acquiring inflammatory reactions. According to an Oxford study, frequent consumption of red meat can increase the risk of cancer by almost three-fold. This is primarily due to the fact that red meat contains a molecule called Neu5GC that human beings don’t normally possess. Hence, increased intake of these foods may cause the body to develop antibodies which, in turn, triggers the inflammation.
Dairy products: Yes, it is true that milk and other dairy products are some of the best “natural gifts” bestowed upon us, but these food items have certain harmful effects as well. Almost 60 per cent of the total population in the world cannot digest milk. A very common allergen, milk triggers a variety of inflammatory responses in the body like skin rashes, constipation and breathing problems. In fact, if you have a milk allergy, consuming such products can even cause pain and inflammation in your joints. This is because during an allergic reaction to milk, histamine is released in excessive amounts, which trigger the inflammation.
