KANO State government is to spend N2.7b for the sponsorship of 300 indigenes of the state to study medicine, pharmacy and healthcare related courses in various foreign universities. Speaking at a ceremony to host the beneficiaries at Government House yesterday, Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, explained that the lucky students are to enjoy the state government’s scholarship, following the government’s intervention in its effort to address the manpower requirement in the healthcare sector. The governor noted that the project was made possible as a result of the aggressive internal revenue generation drive of the administration and the pruning of its recurrent expenditures, an action that he said has assisted in improving the states revenue base. The 300 medical students will be going to India, Egypt, Uganda, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia for their medical training. According to Kwankwaso, the government has spent billions of naira in funding 501 students, as well as other students to study courses abroad, as part of measures to restore Kano’s past glory, adding that the government has embarked on massive construction of classroom blocks at the cost of N7b, as part of efforts to improve the education sector.
