The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, has performed cochlea surgeries on ten patients.

They comprise five adults and five children whose hearing impairment defied the use of hearing aids.

The implants were done by surgeons at the Ear, Nose and Throat Department of the hospital.

Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Wale Oke, said that the working implants proves that cochlea procedures could be done successfully at LASUTH and by extension in Nigeria.

Represented by the Director, Clinical Services and Training, Dr Ayoade Adedokun, the CMD noted that the surgeons were mostly indigenous and staff of LASUTH .

Consultant ENT Surgeon, Dr Wale Olubi, who took part in the surgeries, said the switching on of the implants was successful.

Fifty five-year-old Alhaji Nureni Rufai, who has been having hearing problem for 15 years, commended the Lagos State government for funding the procedure.

Mrs. Bosede Sanya-Alabi, a 54-year-old staff of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and pioneering recipient of the cochlea implant,  enjoined wealthy Nigerians to assist those in need of the implants.
