A professor of Plant Genetics at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Kingsley Akpabio, has said that the HIV and Ebola Virus Disease are different categories of genetically modified organisms.
He stated that both HIV and Ebola were products of genetic engineering which were not intended to be what they are today.
Akpabio said this on Monday during the 40th inaugural lecture of the university entitled “Science of the green mass, value of life tapes and the future of the next generation.”
He explained that the dangers of genetic engineering were greater than the benefits; adding that the products of genetic engineering often end up poorer and weaker than the original material.
“In agriculture, the improved varieties, special breeds, exotic hybrids and even cloned biotechnologically produced plants and animals are all results of genetic engineering.
“Corns, dogs, plantains and dwarf bananas, cows and Ebola and HIV are different categories of genetically modified organisms.
“The dangers of genetic engineering are greater than the benefits. The HIV is a product of genetic engineering not intended to be what it is today; same thing with Ebola,” he said.
He said chromosomes were the key to the formation of the next generation of life, warning that the stability of the chromosome should not be disturbed merely for scientific curiosity.
