Nigerian Optometric Association, NOA in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, has called on Nigerians, particularly, drivers to annually go for eye checkup or risked being victims of Glaucoma and other eyes related ailments. They also posited that majority of the road accidents recorded in Nigeria are mostly caused by blurred vision.
Speaking yesterday at an activity to mark this year’s Word Sight Day in Lagos, the Chairman, NOA, Lagos Branch, Dr. Ogechi Nwokedi, and the Deputy Route Commander, Mrs. Olabisi Sonusi and the Ag. Sector Public Education Officer, FRSC Lagos Sector Command said that the road walk was organised in commemoration of World Sight to create awareness on eye care which is the window of the soul.
Nwokedi who spoke on the theme, “Stronger Together” to create awareness on vision standards for safe driving; lamented that ignorant of regular eye check has made many people susceptible to Glaucoma which causes irreversible blindness.
”Yearly eye checkup is crucial to avoid defects like Glaucoma, an eye defect without symptoms. When the eyes are not examined regularly, it is too late to treat. Unfortunately, the damages caused from late treatment of glaucoma are irreversible blindness. So, our collaboration with FRSC tagged: ”Vision and driving,” is to advocate good vision for safe driving. Yearly eyes checkup is very crucial for all, from the childhood to adulthood as we want avoid the social and economic implications of visual impairment.”
The FRSC spokesman, Sonusi, said that majority of road crashes were due to blurred sights of drivers. She urged road users to regularly go for eyes checkup. “We are stressing that as we go for body checkup, the same should be replicated for our eyes annually. Yearly eyes checkup will bring good vision and safe driving. If you don’t get your sight checked you wouldn’t be able to decipher objects well due to blurred vision”
The Deputy Route Commander called on members of National Union of Road Transport Workers to come out today,( Oct. 11, World sight day) for free medical screening all over the country, with Yaba motor designated for Lagos branch.
