Medical and Dental council of Nigeria Public Notice on Clinical Laboratory Inspection

This is to inform all medical and dental practitioners in Nigeria and the general public that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria MDCN has the statutory responsibility for the regulation of medical, dental and alternative medicine practice in Nigeria including clinical laboratory practice by members of the professions as stipulated by the provisions of the Medical and Dental Practitioners' Act Cap M8 LFN 2004 and the various regulatory documents flowing there from. 
 
Council shall continue its statutory visitations to both private and public health facilities (to inspect, monitor or accredit such institutions as the case may be), including clinical laboratories operated by Laboratory Medicine Physicians (Pathologists) and institutions where medical students and doctors are trained. 
 
This notice has become necessary in the light of increasing number of complaints of negligence and malpractice against practitioners from the general public. 
Practitioners who are administrative heads of public and private health institutions are by this notice reminded of their responsibility as stipulated in Rule 50 of the Code of Medical Ethics in Nigeria (2008 edition), to ensure that practitioners under them comply with all extant rules, regulations and standards including the provisions of the Code of Medical Ethics in Nigeria (Rule 49) on Private Practice (PP) by practitioners in the Government employment. 
Council also wishes to state that its disciplinary activities are ongoing and practitioners against whom the Medical and Dental Practitioners' Investigating Panel has established prima facies cases shall be arraigned before the Medical and Dental Practitioners' Disciplinary Tribunal as soon as the Chairman of Council is appointed. 
 
The general public is encouraged once more to report to the Council any act(s) of malpractice or negligence committed against them by practitioners. Such reports should be made in the form of sworn affidavits and sent to the Registrar through the following addresses:

Council solicits the cooperation and support of all medical and dental practitioners, chief/medical directors and proprietors of private medical and dental facilities, including the general public in this effort to raise and maintain the standard of health care rendered to our people at the optimum levels.
