The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, (MDCN) has vowed not to spare any medical doctor who toys with the lives of their patients and engages in unethical practices.

 

The MDCN Registrar, Dr. Abdulmumuni Ibrahim, and the Chairman of the Kwara State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Abubakar Olayiwola Ayinla, who stated this, at the 30th professional initiation of the 2014 batch B medical graduands of the University of Ilorin, urged the medical doctors to treat human lives brought to their care with utmost sense of responsibility.

 

The Registrar, who was represented by Dr. Isaac Oludipe, specifically admonished the new medical doctors to take documentation seriously in the discharge of their duty. He also urged them to make the Oath of medical ethics their companion throughout their practice life.

 

Advising the new medical graduands to always be guided by the ethics of the profession, as this would save them from unnecessary litigation, the MDCN Registrar noted that the days have since gone when doctors go unquestioned over any form of dereliction of duty. He warned that patients would no longer hesitate to sue an erring doctor

 

Ibrahim congratulated the new medical doctors on the successful completion of their studies and wished them success in their chosen career. The MDCN’s representative later administered the Hippocratic Oath on the 114 medical graduands.

 

Earlier in his address, the outgoing Provost, College of Health Sciences, Prof. A. B. O. Omotoso, reminded the graduands not to forget the enormous responsibilities that lie ahead of them. He stressed, “The medical doctor does not simply swing a stethoscope around his neck; he carries responsibility on his shoulders and caters for the life of society- on the most literal level. There are global issues to grasp with and local challenges you must equally face.”
