The body which joined ots public hospitals members in a nationwide strike which began yesterdat akso called for the scapping of Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU).
Addressing a press conference in Ado Ekiti yesterday, the NMA chairman in the state, Dr Obitade Obimakinde, said such proposal by the federal government could cause internalt confusion in the country's health sector and take its toll on the patients
While stating that pharmacists and nurses should be allowed to continue to play supportive roles and take directives from doctors, Obimakinde said clinical structures of the hospitals could be eroded if the proposal was adopted .
On the scrapping on the JOHESU, he said such will pave way for each professional affiliate body to operate through its parent organisations.
The erosion of some demarcations among medical experts in the hospitals, according to him, would cripple the health indices, like child and maternal mortality rate that are rampant in the system
The NMA said,"We are not saying there shouldn't be career progression for nurses, pharmacists and other medical and paramedic officers, but they should be made to play supportive roles to doctors or else this may cause chaos and confusion in the system.
