Nigeria Society of Physiotherapists: Doctors’ Strike Illegal and Untimely

The Nigeria Society of Physiotherapists, NSP, has condemned the industrial action by the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, describing it as untimely and illegal.

National president of the association, Taiwo Oyewunmi, made this known to newsmen yesterday.

In a reaction to current happenings in the health sector, Oyewunmi criticised the timing of the strike, saying the nation is currently experiencing lots of disasters and, as such, does not need further demonstration of callousness as exhibited by the doctors on strike. Moreover, he noted that the NMA had once referred to the Joint Health Sector Union, JOHESU, as ‘unfeeling’ during the association’s strike.

“Let it be on record that NMA told Nigerians that JOHESU does not have compassion when they went on strike. So we want to know if they can say the same about themselves,” he stated. He further insisted that NMA is not a registered trade union hence it does not have the legitimacy to embark on industrial action, adding that “there is also a court order in place, restricting its member, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria MDCAN, from embarking on strike.
