The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in Kebbi has offered free treatment to 4, 425 indigent persons in Argungu Local Government Area of the state.
The state Chairman of the association, Dr Umar Garba, told newsmen on Wednesday in Argungu that the gesture was to promote the health status of people in rural areas.
He said the programme targeted ``indigent people who lacked adequate funds for treatment, to enhance health care delivery among the rural dwellers''.
Garba said that the NMA in the state would continue with the programme as part of its members' contribution to the poor, the needy and other indigent people in the state.
Reacting to the development, the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Muhammad Mera, commended the association for the initiative, saying it would greatly promote healthy living.
Meanwhile, the medical doctors have donated drugs to 246 inmates of Argungu Prison to improve their health status.
``The inmates needed to be encouraged to become productive in the society and shun anti social behaviours," Garba said.
The Chief Superintendent of the prison, Lawal Idris, commended the NMA for the donation and urged other associations to emulate it.
