The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State chapter, wants the state House of Assembly to intervene in the payment of the backlog of salary arrears the state government owes its members.
The state chairman of the association, Dr. Aniekeme Uwah, during a courtesy call on the Speaker of the Assembly, Mr. Onofiok Luke, said the state government owes the doctors salary arrears spanning over two years.

“We need to bring this matter of salary arrears’ backlog to the Assembly for their immediate intervention. It is ridiculous for someone to be owed salaries for over two years.
“Besides, we are conscious of the fact that government cannot do it all alone, hence there is the need to seek partnership of the AKHA to pass bills that will be of immense benefit to the citizenry,” he said.
He urged the AKHA to pass into law, private bills seeking improvement in Primary Health Care Development; the Akwa Ibom State Health Care Waste Management Agency; the Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Scheme; ban on the hawking of uncertified health and herbal products including services on the streets, markets, and dissemination of false information; a bill seeking the provision of paternal leave for men in the state and the implementation of the national health bill, 2014.
The speaker agreed to partner the NMA to ensure that qualitative healthcare delivery is given to the people of Akwa Ibom State.
