NMA Threatens Strike Over Abducted Doctor

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kaduna State chapter, has said that it is not ruling out the possibility of down tooling if its abducted member, Dr Stephen Kitchener is not released soon.

“Dr Kitchener was abducted on Tuesday at about 5pm at his private residence in Tukur-Tukur, Zaria and since then, no contact has been established with his abductors”, NMA stated.

Addressing a press conference yesterday in Kaduna, chairman of NMA, Kaduna State chapter, Dr Aliyu Usman Bappah, described the abduction of the septuagenarian as unfortunate and most traumatic.

He said, “The inexplicable abduction of an iconic doctor and senior citizen in the course of rendering scarce medical service to the people of Nigeria poses an immediate and permanent danger to the actualisation of Universal Health coverage as currently advocated by the NMA and the federal government.”

NMA lamented that rather than celebrating the achievements of someone who has refused to retire even at old age, he is being subjected to untold hardship by his abductors.

“On this note, therefore, the NMA wishes to state that the abduction of Baba Kitchener is a serious dent on our collective humanity and a sad commentary on our value system as a people. This ignominy can only be atoned for by expeditiously returning the old man to his loving family unharmed.

“Although we will explore all avenues to effect his release, but we are not ruling out the possibility of down tooling in solidarity if he is not released as soon as possible,” Dr Bappah said.

He lamented that the spate of insecurity in the country is daily escalating, prompting the increasing fear that Nigeria is being completely overrun by yet unknown forces.

“NMA, therefore, wishes to challenge the federal government to activate all necessary machinery to ensure a speedy and safe release of Dr Kitchener and all other abducted Nigerians particularly the innocent school girls still missing from the dark incident in Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State.
