NMA Urges Support for Liberia, Others To Combat Virus

The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Osun State, Dr. Suraj Ogunyemi, has urged the Federal Government and individuals to offer support to Liberia, Sierra Leone and other West African countries being ravaged by the Ebola Virus Disease in order for Nigeria to be totally free of the virus.
Ogunyemi said this in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo on Tuesday on the sideline of the induction ceremony for the newly-qualified medical doctors from the College of Health Sciences of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso.
He said, “In the spirit of ECOWAS, I think Nigeria should support Liberia and other West African countries to wage war against the Ebola virus.
“They are our neighbours and people from these countries travel through ECOWAS nations. I think supporting them will also assist to prevent the virus from being spread into Nigeria again.
“Nigerian borders are very porous and people come in and go out through many routes so, we will be at peace if these countries are supported to win the war against the Ebola outbreak.”
The NMA chairman also urged the newly-inducted doctors to join their colleagues in the war to ensure that the Ebola virus disease is kept out of Nigeria.
He said, “Ensure that you use protective equipment and while attending to patients maintain high ethical standard and don’t let down your guard. Join in sensitising members of the public on what they need to do to keep EVD away.
“We urge members of the public to continue to be vigilant. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water and ensure that sick persons seek medical attention promptly.”
