NMA Wants Protective Equipment In Hospitals

THE Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kaduna State branch, has advised the Federal Government to ensure that hospitals across the country install protective equipments against the spread of Ebola virus, just as it expressed fears that health sector workers were at greater risk of contacting the disease.

Addressing newsmen in Kaduna yesterday, the branch chairman, Dr. Muhammed Sani Ibrahim, said that most Nigerian hospitals lack protective equipment for the workers, though he noted that no case of the virus has been recorded in state yet.

According to Dr. Ibrahim, the fact that health workers are at greater risk if there is no protective equipment in all hospitals “can be a potential cause of spread to patients and their relatives within the hospital and to the community at large.”

He commended the proactive measures put in place by the governments of Kaduna and Anambra states, among others, to prevent the disease reaching their states and their preparedness towards managing any possible outbreak.

“We, however, wish to encourage all state governments to do more, especially at lower levels where information is most lacking. The Nigerian Medical Association wishes to commend the federal and Lagos State governments since the first case of Ebola was discovered in the country,” he added.

“NMA is presently working with appropriate authorities to prevent Ebola from spreading in Nigeria. Ebola rapidly kills about 50 to 90 percent of the people that contact it, meaning that within a short time, it could kill up to 9 to 10 people who contact it.”
