Ogun State Government has organised refresher training for its health workers towards detection and prevention of outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus and other viral haemorrhagic fevers (VHFs).
A statement issued by the state Ministry of Health at the weekend in Abeokuta, the state capital, quoted the Commissioner for Health, Olaokun Soyinka, as emphasising that the health workers were trained on detection and management of suspected cases of the ravaging virus.
Soyinka emphasised that Governor Ibikunle Amosun has authorised and released funds for the training programme to keep health workers in the state abreast of the emerging virus.
According to the statement: “Now that a suspected case has been reported in Lagos State, it is prudent to advise members of the public on what to look out for to ensure the situation is curbed.”
The commissioner, however, enjoined members of the public to avoid contact with dead animals, especially monkeys and rats, disclosing that the signs and symptoms of VHFs include vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, skin rashes bleeding from the nose and other parts of the body.
He also warned that people should avoid direct contact with body fluids of affected individuals, stressing that anyone with such signs should consult surgeon immediately.
