The Paediatric Association of Nigeria has urged the Federal Government to resuscitate the nation’s ailing medical centres.
The association said this would reduce the alarming rate of infant mortality in the country.
The PAN National President, Prof. Olowu Olumuyiwa, stated this on Tuesday in Calabar, Cross River State, while announcing programmes for the association’s forthcoming 45th Annual General Scientific Conference.
The conference has the theme, “Adolescent Health in Nigeria: Present Status, Challenges and Prospects.”
Olumuyiwa said the appeal to the government became necessary in order to check the decay in medical centres.
He said,“ With the decay in the nation’s medical centres, there is the need for the government to quickly wade into the matter before it gets out of hand.”
According to him, the association wants the government to reintroduce feeding, deworming and medical treatment for pupils.
He stressed that if all these challenges were solved, Nigerians would be healthier.
The association, he added, was worried about the neglected adolescent population in the country.
The PAN President said if adolescents were given the best health care, the country would have productive population.
Also, the Vice President of the association, Dr. Ngozi Ibeziak, urged parents to desist from giving their daughters to early marriages to avoid diseases like Vesico Vaginal Fistula, cancer and related sicknesses.
