In a bid to combat the deadly Ebola Virus Disease and other communicable diseases in the country, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria has called for harmony and collaboration among the various interests in the nation’s health sector.
The PFN said this at the 2014 annual pharmacy week of its Edo State chapter.
It stated that a holistic approach to the crises affecting the sector would pave the way for healthier nation, rather than attempting to resolve union crises, as they affect doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists and other health workers.
The guest speaker, Dr. Omeh Onuche, urged the various unions to set aside their differences in the interest of the country, adding that the problems in the health sector would continue as long as segmented resolutions continued to hold sway.
“The acrimony in the health sector must be resolved one way or the other. Harmony in the health sector is a must if we must move ahead as a nation,” Omeh said.
Also speaking, the Assistant Director, Pharmaceutical Services of the Edo State Hospitals Management Board, Chris Iyare, commended the efforts of the federal and state governments in checking the spread of the dreaded EVD.
Iyare, who was one of the recipients of the PSN merit awards, called for more pharmaceutical research with a view to finding a lasting solution to the disease and urged Nigerian to treat the recommended preventive measures with deserved seriousness.
He said, “We thank God for the Federal Government and government of Edo State for the steps so far taken to check the spread; for the first time, I am happy that the Federal Government has risen to a critical challenge.
“I do not agree that we are not doing enough research but I will still encourage my colleagues to go into core research and do more to combat whatever public health issues we may face in our time.
“There are universal precautions, where we have to use sanitisers, and all of that will go a long way in checking the spread of Ebola.”
Earlier, the state chairman of PSN, Dr. Solomon Ikpefan, while commending the health policies of the state government, called for introduction of a state task force to rid the state of fake and counterfeit drugs.
