An end might not be in sight to the crisis in the nation’s health sector as the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, yesterday vowed to resist any move to make the position of Chief Medical Directors, CMDs, of teaching hospitals the preserve of medical doctors.
The Chairman, Oyo State PSN, Mr. Adeyinka Ishola, said this in Ibadan while addressing journalists on the activities lined up to mark the Pharmacy Week in the state.
It would be recalled that the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, had threatened to embark on an indefinite strike from July 1, unless the Federal Government acceded to its demands, among which is reserving the position of CMD for doctors only.
Ishola, who was flanked by other leaders of the PSN in the state, urged the Federal Government not to dance to the tune of the NMA, stating that medical doctors were just part of the team in the health sector.
According to him, the position of CMD is an administrative one, and there is no reason why the other professionals in the health sector cannot hold it.
He maintained that this has always been the position over the years, adding that the leadership of the PSN and other professionals in the health sector would never be part of the blackmail by the NMA. Ishola insisted that medical doctors are not superior or better than the other professionals.
His words: “We will continue to say capital NO to making the position of CMD the preserve of medical doctors, so long as health care is a multi-disciplinary practice.
To dance to the tune of the NMA will not be in the interest of the public. “The time has come to put an end to the arrogance of the medical doctors and the PSN will not hesitate to be in the forefront of this crusade to give vent to the fact that healthcare is a team work and collective responsibility,” he observed.
While speaking on the activities for the week which will end tomorrow, Ishola said the keynote speaker for the opening ceremony holding today is Prof. (Mrs.) Femi Oyewo, while other speakers are Dr. Lolu Ojo, Dr. Ibrahim Oreagba and Mr. Taiye Adeleye.
