The Nigeria Police Force, NPF, has restated its commitment to the physical and mental well-being of its personnel, saying it would give priority to the recruitment of more medical staff for its personnel.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Abubakar, who stated this yesterday at the opening of a three-day medical seminar for policemen in Abuja, also pledged more assistance to police health institutions in the geo-political zones.
He said the force would not only pay its specialists ‘police salaries’, but would also pay them their professional fees as a way of motivating them.
The IGP said the force is already building 26-bed cottage hospitals in each geo-political zones, adding, however, that there is, at present, no command without a medical facility.
“We have made it a point of duty now that, very soon, if there is going to be a recruitment, utmost consideration will be given to people in this field to be able to have more medical personnel,” he stated.
Abubakar added that the police high command had evolved measures to reposition the Police Medical Services for greater efficiency, in view of the urgent need to cater for the health of police personnel, especially as the nation battles insurgency.
“The medical department has been sleeping, and we are trying to wake them from slumber. It is on record that with the arrangement of the HMOs, we have the number, because no single organisation in Nigeria is larger than the Nigeria Police.
“This is an opportunity for us to put the experts together to think outside the box, because it appears that they have been thinking within the box.
“You can hardly go to any of these new hospitals that we built that is not adequately equipped. Till today, we have some equipment kept aside and which can be used to replace others when the need arises,” the IGP said.
He also stated that adequate attention was being paid the forensic unit of the force, as well as other aspects, to can enhance the performance of the force.
