PSN, President visits National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) on Monday, 25th July 2016

"In 1986, the PSN saw the wisdom in establishing a national institution to be called NIPRD and went ahead to deliver a MEMO to government on the issue" says Prof. K S Gamaniel, DG/CEO NIPRD

PSN provided the seed money that propelled the take-off of the Institute, hence the need to continue working together.

Opportunities for R & D of new drug molecules and phytomedicines are there in the institute but we must support so that they can maintain the good work of ensuring quality of drugs in use and supporting local manufacture of quality products.

Right now they have five products-Niprisan, Niprimal, Niprimune, Niprifan and Nipridab. However, only Niprisan- for the management of sickle cell disorder is registered with NAFDAC and PSN is ready to partner with them to actualise production of commercial quantity. Preclinical studies of the four other products(Antimalarial, Immuno- Stimulant, Anti -diabetic and anti- fungal have been completed and have moved to the clinical stage.

They have 12 laboratories conducting stability studies on drugs and phytomedicines, determination of bioavailability/bio equivalence of ACTs ARVs used in Nigeria, establishment of baseline CD4 level, verification of claims by Traditional Medicines Practitioners, quality Standards and provision of R&D facilities for Postgraduate studies etc Indeed they need our support and that government, International donors and pharmaceutical manufacturers.

We thank God that today NIPRD is an internationally acclaimed institution
