Quackery: Doctors Tell FG to Reconstitute Medical Council

The Nigerian Medical Association has called on the Federal Government to reconstitute the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

The Lagos NMA Chairman, Dr. Oluwamuyiwa Odusote, made this call at the 2016 Annual Physician Week, with the theme, Health Care Delivery in a Frail Economy: Challenges and Way Forward.

According to Odusote, the delay in reconstituting the board has allowed unresolved issues relating to ethical practices to linger.

Odusote said, "The MDCN is a body that manages and regulates doctor's practice. When a patient has any issue against the doctor, the MDCN is supposed to handle, interphase and administer necessary disciplinary action like a court. But now that it has been dissolved, people engage in malpractices with no one to caution them and patients can't seek redress.

"The implication of dissolving this council is not only that litigation is left undetermined, but it also makes the NMA doubt the prioritisation of health care programmes."

He added that the Nigerian-health care sector was donor-driven and health care professionals must reduce their dependence on such aids by increasingdomestic funding.

Onakoya said, "Physicians need to address the issues of quality in terms of infrastructure, services and clinical outcome in order to earn more trust and this is will make assistance with funding possible and easier."
