In order to enhance improvement in the health sector in the country, the House of Representatives may soon pass a bill for the creation of the office of the Surgeon-General of the Federation.
A member of the House representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Hon. Abiodun Awoleye, disclosed this yesterday while speaking with journalists in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Awoleye, who is the sponsor of the bill, said after passage into law, the bill would improve the health sector.
According to him, the bill, after passage, will separate the roles of the Minister of Heath, who will perform the ceremonial roles, from the Surgeon-General, who will safeguard the health of the nation.
Awoleye, a member of the House Committee on Health, said the rationale behind the introduction of the bill was to ensure that technocrats are employed to administer the Ministry of Health, and professionals in the health sector to take charge of the health needs of the nation devoid of ‘frivolities’ and ‘ceremonial duties’ being performed by the office of present Minister of Health.
A member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, the sponsor of the bill also lauded the Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, for shifting the schools’ resumption date till October 6, so as to put all measures in place for the prevention of Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, in the state.
He appealed to the people of the state to continue supporting the Ajimobiled administration, which according to him, is daily seeking for the transformation of the state, and revert it to the pacesetter status for which it was known.
Awoleye, who has concluded plans to present his letter of intent and make a public declaration for his re-election in 2015, also warned ‘political detractors’ to stop peddling rumours that he had left the APC.
He described such rumours as the handiwork of “jobless politicians, rumour mongers and political detractors who are not appreciating the good works the governor had embarked upon to uplift the lives of the people.”
Awoleye said, “All is now set to present my letter of intent to re-contest the Ibadan North Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives under our great party, APC.
