SPDC Gives N26m Scholarship To Nurses

The Shell Petroleum Development Company during the week presented a cheque ofN25.9m sholarship and 50 laptops to students of Midwifery School in Oron, Akwa Ibom State. 
The SPDC Manager, Government and Community Relations, Mr. Edesiri Akpomudjere, said the gesture was part of the company's
commitment to enhance the capacity development of the health care personnel in the Niger Delta region. Akpomudjere said the 
company under its Midwifery Partnership Training Programme had sponsored the training of 300 nurses on midwifery in the Niger Delta region. 
According to him, each of the six states of Akwa Thorn, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers, had 50nurses benefiting from the programme. 
The Community Relations Manager stated that under the programme, each beneficiary was entitled to full upkeep 
including basic expenditure and school fees. 
He said, "Specifically, the company spends on the average the sum of N660,ooo on each student for the training. 
"It is to help in meeting the Millennium DevelopmentGoals four and five in the Niger Delta region." 
SPDC Regional Community Health Manager, Dr. Edet Edet, said the sponsorship was for the duration of 18 months on midwifery programme. 
Edet said that SPDC was aware that the rate of maternal mortality was high in Nigeria. 
According to him, the company is determined to support capacity development to increase the number of skilled health care personnel in Akwa Ibom State.
State Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Patricia Ekanem, described SPDC as a dependable partner to the Akwa Ibom government.
Ekanem, who represented the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Emem Bassey, noted that SPDC had made indelible marks on health programmes in the state.
