Nurses at the State House Medical Centre have launched a health magazine, becoming the first nursing group to have a publication targeting the general public with health information.
The Rising Stars Health First magazine will be carried in general stores and clinics, according to Taiwo Olatigbe, head of the committee which facilitated production.
It will provide articles teaching good health practice, diet, disease prevention,
child care and nutrition, especially aimed at mothers.
Its first edition, which launched on World Breastfeeding Week, put out articles addressing infant to feeding practice.
Executive Director of National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Ado
Muhammad, said the responsibility for breastfeeding exclusively before weaning to add supplementary feeding was not to left to mothers alone.
“We all have a duty to ensure mothers breastfeed,” he said at the launch.
Aishatu Jakada, Chief Nursing Officer for immunisation, obstetrics and gynaecology at State House Medical Centre said it was increasingly important for husbands to support women to breastfeed babies.
At least one man was recognised and awarded for being the only husband on record at the hospital to regularly accompany his wife and child for checkups and immunisation appointments.
