OWERRI—Uneasy calm now pervades the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, FMC, following the non-payment of June and July 2014 staff salaries to those not captured by the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS.
Our correspondent, stumbled on the looming labour crisis yesterday, when he visited the medical establishment to probe alleged Ebola fever scare that rent the air in Owerri.
Some of the workers, who spoke to our correspondent on strict grounds pf anonymity, lamented that the affected workers are in three distinct segments.
“Some staff are owed June and July salaries and there are also those that are owed either June or July salaries. The truth is that workers are no longer very comfortable with the development”, the staff fumed.
All the workers that spoke on the issue, expressed regret that “the hospital management has not done enough to redress the anomaly.”
Obviously gripped by fear of the impending workers’ agitation, the FMC management issued an internal memo, FMCO/ACCTS/2014/IPPIS/301.
The memo, signed on behalf of the Medical Director, Dr. Angela Uwakwem, by the Assistant Director, Finance and Head of Accounts Department, Mr. Theodore C. Iroegbu, was dated August 7, 2014 and pasted on the hospital’s notice board.
