The theme of the workshop: Pharmaceutical Care in oncology practice

Organizers: University College Hospital, Ibadan – Pharmacy Department, in conjunction with

Center for Global Health, University of Chicago, Chicago, USA.

 

Objectives of the Workshop

1. To build capacity for global cancer management through reconstitution and compounding of parenteral cytotoxic medicines that meet current good manufacturing    practices.

2. To further develop professional competence of oncology pharmacists and radiopharmacists.

3. To develop pharmacists participation in clinical trials

4. To connect pharmaceutical industries with pharmacist in hospitals, community and academica in order to improve cancer care.

Background of the workshop

Cancer knows no geographical borders and is rapidly becoming a global pandemic, causing one in seven deaths worldwide. Internationally, deaths from cancer greatly outnumber deaths from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. By 2030, the global caner burden is expected to increase to 21.7 million new cases and 13 million deaths annually.

 

Low- and middle-income countries including Nigeria (LMICs) shoulder most of the cancer burden. In 2016, out of nearly 9 million cancer-related deaths worldwide, 70% were in LMICs. And yet, these coutnries are often illprepared and under-resourced to confront the dramatically rising burden of cancer, which is compounded by the high burden of infectious diseases. As a result, more and more people suffer and die of cancer due to late presentation, lack of access to treatment and pain relief, and in large part because of their extensive need to remain in the shadows.

Therefore programs must be developed to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, improve healthcare provider capacity and provide access to life-saving medications. Such 

 

programs should include:

Improved training of African oncologists and other healthcare providers, to empower them to deliver better educational, diagnostic and treatment services to their patients.

 

Implementation of clinical trials to evaluate efficacy and safety of currently available cancer therapeutics in African patients and settings.

 

Target group

Pharmacists in hospital, community, industry or academic and other healthcare professionals interested in oncology.
