On the 31st of August 2017, the Accident and Emergency Student Nurses of The School of Post Basic Nursing University of Portharcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) visited inmates behind the walls of the Portharcourt Maximum Security Prisons.

 

Led by their lecturers Mrs D.V Maxwell (Coordinator A&E), Mrs Iwuh, Mrs Peters and student representative Nurse Olaniyan Abiola with over 25 A&E Nurses, a cohort of students who requested to visit the state prison as part of their field work and care for all patients irrespective of who they are. The Nurses were led around the facility by The Deputy Controller of Prison PortHarcourt Command (DCP) Loveday Omu, CP Wakama Paul.(Dr) and ACP Uzoma Felicia (Matron in-charge).

 

The Nurses attended to about 250 inmates of the Portharcourt State Prisons and Services rendered include:

- Health talk on Personal Hygiene

- Blood pressure check with vital signs

- Provision of Incentives comprising tissue paper, bathing soap, snacks and drinks.

- Donation of drugs to the clinic

At the end of the visit, the inmates expressed their appreciation to the nurses who took the time to visit and care for them irrespective of their incarceration or nature of their crime.
