The Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association, Kaduna State Chapter, Dr. Mohammed Sani has said that medical doctors across the country are being blackmailed by politicians to drum-up support from members of public against the strike action by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
Sani made this known in an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP Weekend yesterday in Abuja. He said some politicians have taken to blackmailing Nigerian doctors by giving fictitious figures of the number of patients dying daily as a result of the strike action by doctors.
He noted that most of the 24-point demands of doctors to the federal government contrary to the impression created in the minds of the public are mostly not issues centered on money.
“There is a propaganda making round that doctors are on strike because they want an increment in salary; but I can tell you that doctors went on strike not because of money but on other vital issues that affect the operations of doctors in hospital.
This is the first time in Nigeria that doctors will totally support a strike and they are very angry at the way they are being treated by the federal government and some of the comments made by some politicians recently on the strike,” he said.
He said some politicians are trying to politicise the issues raised by the doctors using the media. Such comments Dr. Sani said make members of the NMA very unhappy.
However, Kaduna NMA chair said the on-going strike does not extend to victims of the recent bomb attacks in Kaduna and other crisis areas as doctors have been directed to attend victims in the various hospitals in the state.
