The World Health Organisation coordinator in Ekiti State, Dr Olufunmilola Kolude, on Thursday warned that it was imperative for all nations to take decisive medical actions to tackle measles, describing it as the greatest killer of children globally.
Kolude said, “Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It remains an important cause of death among children globally despite the availability of safe and effective vaccine”, advising that “it is therefore a duty of all stakeholders to ensure all eligible children in our societies are appropriately immunized.”

Kolude spoke in Ado Ekiti during the administration of Vaccine 2 (MCV2) on children between the ages of 15 and 23 months.
She said, “The introduction of second opportunity for measles vaccination is occasioned by the fact that not all the children vaccinated with the first dose of measles vaccines will be protected, hence the need for a second dose which will help increase coverage to 95 per cent needed to achieve meaningful immunity.”
She said: “Several cases have been reported recently across Nigeria, especially in Oyo, Lagos and Ogun states this year, but Ekiti didn’t experience it because of the success of 2018 immunisation programme.”
