Why Cross Rivers Teaching Hospital Doctors Are Still On Strike

Eventhough resident doctors in other teaching hospitals in the country have suspended their strike action, their counterparts at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) and other medical workers have resolved to stay at home.

This development, according to them, is because the hospital is owing them six months salaries.

Some of the doctors who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity said they would only return to work when their outstanding salaries of six months and other entitlements, including training/course fees are fully paid and refunded.

"We are owed at least six months salaries. How can we continue to work without pay? That is not even all; many of our colleagues that were sent for further training and other courses have not been paid the attendant fees and other entitlements. Though other resident doctors in other parts of the country suspended their strike about three weeks ago, here at UCTH, we have resolved not to return to work until all our entitlements, especially the six months", one of the doctors said.

When Daily Trust spoke with the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Thomas Agan, he said though the resident doctors are on strike, there was an arrangement by the hospital management for medical consultants to stand in.
