The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) says it shuts down 1,236 illegal pharmacy premises and convicts three erring pharmacists for professional misconduct.
Mr Nurudeen Mohammed, Registrar of the council, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Thursday in Abuja.
The registrar disclosed that the three convicts were delisted from the council’s roll and barred from practicing.
"Erring pharmacists were arraigned before the investigating panel and disciplinary tribunal during which three of them were convicted.
He also said that 30 practitioners were still under investigation by the council.
Justifying the action of the council, the registrar said the enabling Act - Law of the Federation, 2004, Cap. P17- mandates it to regulate and control pharmacy education, training, discipline and general practice. He said the council also had the statutory powers to regulate and control the profession, practitioners, practice and premises.
Mohammed said what the council did was in line with best global practices.
"Global reports of new and unprecedented developments in pharmacy practice in recent times necessitate careful assessment of the processes and procedures for doing things especially in the regulatory arena.
"PCN has pursued the maintenance of professional discipline among professionals with vigour to ensure that pharmacy practice environment is serviced in line with professional ethics."
He stressed that the council was poised to positively turn the pharmaceutical sub-sector of the nation around.
The registrar also disclosed that the council had inaugurated and concluded a pilot scheme of mapping of pharmaceutical facilities, services and institutions in Lagos
