The Abia State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Osuji, has said he was not aware that workers of the state Hospital Management Board were owed 14-month salary arrears. Osuji, who was reacting to a protest embarked upon by the state HMB staff, explained that the state government would meet with the leadership of the unions with a view to resolving the matter.
On the unpaid salaries, the commissioner said, “I don’t know about that. It is only them, JOHESU members are protesting all over the country. Their problem will be sorted out. We will get across to them and talk to their chief executive and know what to do by next week.”
Recall that the state Hospital Management Board workers had on Monday embarked on a protest in front of the hospital, demanding from government its 14 months unpaid salaries.
The Chairman of the coalition of eight labour unions, Echeta Chikezie, said they were agitating for their 14 months unpaid salaries.
Chikezie said the state government had in the past appealed to them to forfeit the whole of 2019 salaries and assured them that they would begin to pay them fully from the year 2020, adding “surprisingly, the state government failed to pay July and August salaries”, which he said led to the protest.
