Highlights for today (24 January 2016):
i. Three (3) new confirmed cases reported from Edo state
ii. Ten (10) new suspected cases were reported from 5 states: Bauchi (2); Oyo (1); Edo (4); FCT (2); Ebonyi (1)
iii. One (1) new death in a suspected case from Ebonyi state
iv. No rumour under investigation
v. Kogi state has recorded negative laboratory results since first suspected case was reported and as such has been removed from the list. As at today, 18 states are currently following up contacts, or have suspected cases with laboratory results pending or laboratory confirmed cases.
vi. Due to laboratory results, all suspected cases that tested negative have been removed from the data base. The total reported cases are now reflecting the laboratory confirmed cases and suspected cases (pending lab results and unknown)
vii. Outbreak investigation is ongoing in the states and retrospective cases which fit the standard case definition for suspected case are being updated.
Epidemiologic summary:
 Total cases reported (confirmed and suspected): 172; Total deaths (confirmed and suspect): 83 (CFR: 48%)
 Total confirmed cases: 57; Deaths in confirmed cases: 34 (CFR: 60%)
RESPONSE:
Coordination
 NCDC/FMOH is taking leadership for coordination supported by partners
 Daily review meeting at the EOC
 Emergency National Council on Health (NCH) convened by the Honourable Minister of Health and Lassa Fever Eradication committee inaugurated
 Production of daily Situation report (SITREP) no15 for 23 Jan 2016.
Case Management and Infection Prevention and Control
 71,000 tabs of Ribavirin, 20,750 vials of parenteral Ribavirin and 960 pieces of PPE distributed to the affected states as of today
 Isolation centers have been identified in most states
 Emergency unit at the FMC, Jabi was decontaminated today by the FCT and NCDC team
Surveillance
 Continuing outbreak investigation in the affected states
 Contact tracing ongoing in affected states
 Clinician sensitization ongoing in affected states
 Akwa Ibom reported a case that was confirmed at Institute of Lassa fever Research Centre, Irrua on the 18th of January, 2016 on the, 23rd January, 2016.
Laboratory
 5 National laboratories with PCR capability are currently conducting analysis of samples
 194 samples analyzed and 57 tested positive for Lassa fever, other VHFs were negative
 63 laboratory results are pending
Communication and Social Mobilization
 NCDC Call Center functional:
 Radio and television jingles are ongoing in the states
 Lassa fever information website (www.lassaalert.org ) linked to the NCDC website has been developed and has gone live.
 Community health education ongoing as part of state team responses
 Nine (9) calls and two (2) rumours (1 each from Katsina state and FCT) received today at the call centre.
Investigation ongoing on the 2 rumours
Challenges
 Coordination of laboratory network leading to delay in sending laboratory results
 Late daily reporting of cases especially from tertiary health facilities
 Logistics support for contact tracing in the states
 Logistics for sample transportation for prompt laboratory diagnosis
 Ribavirin supply low
Next steps
 Reinforce active surveillance, contract tracing and continue outbreak investigation
 Continue clinician sensitization to ensure early detection and reporting
 Continue health education and community sensitization
 Capacity building at state level for coordination, surveillance, case management and IPC, communication and social mobilization
 Coordinate laboratory network for prompt release of documented results.
