A health expert, Pharm David Akpotor has revealed that no fewer than 400, 000 children die of immutable diseases mostly of diarrhea and pneumonia annually in Nigeria.
Quoting from a survey published in a journal by Federal Ministry of Health FMoH/NPHCDA (june2012): Essential Childhood scale-up plan(2012- 2015) page 10, he disclosed that about 201,000 died of diarrhea and 177,000 died of pneumonia which constitute about 16% and 19 % of the total death rate.
Speaking as a keynote presenter at a press conference on emerging trends on child and family health in Nigeria organized by Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Center (CISLAC) with support from Partnership from Advocacy in Child and Family Health (PACFAH) in Ibadan, he said that the figure had increased over the years.
Akpotor said there had been increase in the rate of child mortality in Nigeria due to low level of compliance to the international standard on health care delivery. He lamented the poor compliance with 2001 Abuja declaration of the African Union conference where they agreed that 15 per cent of the total budget for state and federal government should be given to the health sector .
“States like Oyo state have about 5.5percent of its total allocation for the health sector just like many of the states of the federations and this will no doubt tell a lot on the health care delivery in their state as most of them do not even adequately access the counterpart fund for that assist them in the health sector,” he added.
He said family planning can help lifts nations out of poverty as the UNPFA projected.
