The federal ministry of health is working in collaboration with the Cancer Education and Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria (CEAFON) and Roche Products Limited
to upgrade six more federal tertiary hospitals to oncology centers of excellence.
The designated hospitals are University Teaching Hospital Sokoto (North west), University Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri (Northeast), Lagos University Teaching
Hospital (South west), University Teaching Hospital Benin (Southsouth), University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu (Southeast) and Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, which is already so designated.
Permanent secretary of the ministry, Mr Linus Awute disclosed this yesterday in Abuja when officials of the Cancer Education and Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria (CEAFON) and ROCHE products paid him a visit to seek areas of possible collaboration for the conduct of the Nigeria National Cervical Cancer Screening Scale up project.
Awute said intervention efforts from private sector practitioners like Roche is in line with the Public Private Partnership (PPP) which according to him is the best legacy of the ministry, and an important strategy for addressing the challenge of non-communicable diseases and cancer care in particular.
In his response, country manager, Roche Products Ltd, Herman Addae, said cancer is a leading cause of death but enough attention is not given to it because of unavailability of data, lack of enough medical specialists, poor funding and inadequate sensitization amongst others.
