The Association of Medical Social Workers of Nigeria (AMSWON), Lagos State chapter, has trained health workers in Lagos State on trauma and emergency management to reduce the number of Nigerians having mental health problems and depressions.

Medical Director (MD), Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, Dr. Olugbenga Owoeye, who disclosed this, yesterday, at the yearly socio-scientific conference held in Yaba, Lagos, with theme: “Assessing and Understanding Trauma in Clinical Social Work Practice,” said the training came at the right time when many Nigerians have both physical and psychological traumas as a result of kidnappings, banditry and herdsmen attacks, among others, in the country on daily basis.

He stressed the need for non-governmental organisations, religious institutions, individuals and philanthropists, among others, to support social health workers in ensuring that mental health challenges are reduced in the country.
