The Nigerian Medical Association, Federal Capital Territory (NMA-FCT), has announced the release of Dr. Chinonye Nwachukwu, a Ukraine-trained physician who regained her freedom after spending three weeks in kidnappers’ captivity.
Dr. Nwachukwu was reportedly abducted on October 21 while commuting to Garki Hospital, Abuja. Her disappearance had triggered widespread concern among colleagues, family members, and the medical community within and beyond the FCT.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the NMA-FCT had, during a press conference on November 7, appealed to security agencies to intensify efforts toward securing her safe release.
Confirming her freedom in a statement on Monday, NMA-FCT Chairman, Dr. Emeka Ayogu, said the doctor was found in Gwagwalada late Sunday night.
“After almost three weeks in captivity, Dr. Nwachukwu has been freed by her abductors. She was rescued safely in Gwagwalada and is currently receiving adequate medical attention,” Ayogu stated.
He added that Nwachukwu would soon be reunited with her family, expressing gratitude to all who stood by the association during the period of uncertainty.
“We deeply appreciate everyone who supported us with prayers, patience, and solidarity. It was indeed a trying period for the medical community,” he said.
The NMA-FCT has also reiterated its call for improved security and protection of healthcare workers, noting the increasing threats faced by medical professionals in the discharge of their duties.
