Confirmed cases of coronavirus have increased to 10,578 in Nigeria, The NAN reports. This is after the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control announced 416 new cases of coronavirus in the country.

The NCDC made the announcement on Monday, adding that no fewer than 299 patients have died of coronavirus-related complications in the country. Data released by the centre showed that 12 patients died of coronavirus-related complications in the past 24 hours.

As of 11.50 pm on Monday, the country has 7,157 active cases of COVID-19. The centre said, “On the 1st of June 2020, 416 new confirmed cases and 12 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.

“No new state has reported a case in the last 24 hours. “Till date, 10578 cases have been confirmed, 3122 cases have been discharged and 299 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“The 416 new cases are reported from 20 states – Lagos (192), Edo (41), Rivers (33), Kaduna (30), Kwara (23), Nasarawa (18), Borno (17), FCT (14), Oyo (10), Katsina (7), Abia (5), Delta (5), Adamawa (4), Kano (4), Imo (3), Ondo (3), Benue(2), Bauchi(2), Ogun (2), Niger (1).”

The NAN reports that the Federal Government earlier on Monday eased restrictions on places of worship. Also, the government lifted a total lockdown on Kano, adding that domestic flights may resume from June 21.

FG also cut back a nationwide curfew to now run from 10pm to 4am each night, making facemasks mandatory in public. Other tough restrictions remain in place including a limit on public gatherings to no more than 20 people, bars and restaurants staying closed, and a ban on travel between different regions.

Globally, coronavirus has killed at least 373,439 people since the outbreak first emerged in China last December. At least 6,220,110 cases of coronavirus have been registered in 196 countries and territories, according to a tally compiled by AFP at 07pm GMT on Monday.

Also, at least 2,599,500 are now considered recovered. The United States is the worst-hit country with 104,658 deaths from 1,797,457 cases. At least 444,758 people have been declared recovered.

After the US, the hardest-hit countries are Britain with 39,045 deaths from 276,332 cases, Italy with 33,475 deaths from 233,197 cases, Brazil with 29,314 deaths and 514,849 cases and France with 28,833 deaths and 189,220 cases.

Among the countries with the highest death rate from the virus, Belgium has recorded 82 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Spain with 58, Britain with 57, Italy with 55 and France with 44 per 100,000.

China – excluding Hong Kong and Macau – has to date declared 4,634 deaths and 83,017 infections. It has 78,307 recovered cases.

Europe overall has 179,040 deaths from 2,166,993 cases, the United States and Canada have 112,038 deaths from 1,889,104 infections, Latin America and the Caribbean 51,658 deaths from 1,029,284 cases, Asia 16,629 deaths from 560,866 cases, the Middle East 9,628 deaths from 413,951 cases, Africa 4,314 deaths from 151,339 cases, and Oceania 132 deaths from 8,574 cases.
