Job Summary
- The Consultant Emergency Medicine Physician plays a critical role in delivering high-quality care within the Emergency Department (ED).
- This position involves managing a diverse range of acute illnesses and injuries, providing stabilisation and definitive treatment to patients, and ensuring smooth patient flow through the department.
- The Consultant will utilise advanced diagnostic and therapeutic skills to make rapid, evidence-based decisions, particularly in life-threatening situations.
- The role requires leadership in a dynamic, high-pressure environment, guiding a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, and support staff to deliver patient-centered care.
- This includes participating in clinical governance, quality improvement initiatives, and maintaining compliance with national and international standards.
- The Consultant Emergency Medicine Physician will also play a pivotal role in teaching and mentoring junior medical staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and excellence within the department.
- As a representative of the hospital, the Consultant is expected to build and maintain strong communication channels with other departments, including critical care, radiology, and surgery.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Practice:
- Provide advanced assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute medical and surgical emergencies.
- Oversee the stabilisation and resuscitation of critically ill patients.
- Perform emergency procedures, including intubation, central line placement, and chest tube insertion.
- Ensure timely transfer or admission of patients requiring further specialised care.
Leadership and Management:
- Lead the emergency team during shifts, ensuring efficient patient care and workload distribution.
- Develop and implement clinical pathways and protocols for emergency care.
- Manage departmental operations, including resource allocation and staffing.
- Participate in hospital-wide committees related to emergency services and patient safety.
Education and Training:
- Supervise and mentor junior doctors, medical students, and nursing staff.
- Organise and deliver training sessions on emergency procedures and protocols.
- Support staff development through regular appraisals and feedback.
Quality Improvement and Governance:
- Monitor and evaluate clinical outcomes to identify areas for improvement.
- Participate in audits, incident reviews, and patient safety initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
Communication and Collaboration:
- Actively participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
- Maintain effective communication with patients, families, and other healthcare providers.

Communications And Working Relationships:
- Collaborate with critical care, radiology, and surgical teams for comprehensive patient management.
- Liaise with the nursing staff to ensure high standards of care.
- Communicate effectively with patients and their families about treatment plans.
- Engage with administrative staff for operational efficiency.
- Actively participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions.
- Work with external agencies, including emergency medical services.
Line Management:
- Report directly to the Head of Emergency Medicine.
- Provide feedback to the Medical Director on departmental operations.
- Supervise junior doctors, residents, and trainees in the ED.
- Collaborate with the Chief Nursing Officer for patient care strategies.
- Coordinate with the Quality Assurance Manager for clinical audits.
- Work with the Hospital Administrator on resource management.
Organisational Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the strategic planning and development of emergency services.
- Ensure adherence to hospital policies and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent medical degree
- Fellowship in Emergency Medicine (e.g., FCEM, FRCEM, or equivalent)
- Valid medical licence to practise in Nigeria
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certifications
- Postgraduate qualifications in critical care or pre-hospital medicine
- Certification in ultrasound-guided procedures
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of post-specialisation experience in emergency medicine
- Proven expertise in managing complex and high-acuity cases
- Experience working in resource-limited settings
- Research experience with publications in emergency medicine journals
Management and Leadership:
- Demonstrated ability to lead a multidisciplinary team
