Background

The CROSDAT research team, Alex Ekwueme Federal University is carrying out a study that is aimed at assessing the barriers and facilitators to implementing the comprehensive newborn quality of care for the small and sick newborn (SSNB). The study will be in two secondary health care facilities, viz: Asokoro District Hospital and Nyanya General Hospital both in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Nigeria. Comprehensive Newborn Care is being implemented by Newborn Essential Solutions and Technologies,360 (NEST360) in these two secondary health care facilities.

Alex Ekwueme University has been engaged as an institutional research partner by Momentum Country & Global Leadership (MCGL), the anchor of a USAID-funded Project on Quality of Care in Nigeria, to assess the implementation of the quality of comprehensive newborn care for the small and sick newborn.

The CROSDAT research team is looking to fill the role of a Research Manager, Data Manager and Research assistants for research activities that will be carried out in these two secondary health facilities. The study involves exit interviews asking caregiver questions relating to quality-of-care they received while on admission. The study would last for about 8 weeks.

The research assistants will work closely with the research manager and the CROSDAT research team from Alex Ekwueme University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State to conduct these exit interviews.

1. Research Assistants

Number of positions SIX

Responsibilities for research assistant

• To recruit participants to the study from a database of eligible patients and meet targets for recruitment and study completion.
• Administer the informed consent process and receive the signed paper forms from prospective participants and send same to the research manager.
• Carry out quantitative data collection in the form of exit interviews, i.e., interview caregivers as they are discharged from the health care facilities and fill the electronic data collection tool.
• Attend daily debrief sessions during data collection.
• Work under the supervision of research manager and may perform some other related assignments as maybe assigned.
• Work as a member of a research team, led and supervised in the facility by the research manager.

Qualifications for research assistant

• A university education is desirable.
• 1-3 years’ experience conducting research will be an advantage.
• Experience with use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Tablets for data collection, and knowledge of the use of Google forms or KoboCollect is desirable.
• Knowledge of quantitative research methodologies.
• Highly organized with the ability to multitask and work under time pressure.
• Highly motivated, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Able to demonstrate excellent attention to detail, good multi-tasking and problem-solving skills, with ability to comply with strict deadlines.
• Ability to communicate effectively in at least one of the three major Nigerian languages is an advantage.

Remuneration

N80, 000 for the period

2. Research Manager

Responsibilities for research manager

• Collaborate with CROSDAT research team to plan for execution of the research project, including:
• Supervise a team of six research assistants, including assigning daily assignments for interviews and overseeing their day-to-day activities of the research project at the two hospitals.
• Monitor study progress , ensuring that team members are fulfilling assignments and that data collection timeline is occurring as scheduled
• Trouble shoot and support team members and research assistants in execution of the project,
•  Ensure data quality checks happen daily, and data is uploaded to server on a daily basis.
• He/she would give daily feedback calls to the CROSDAT team
• He/she will write reports of activities done when the project has been concluded.
• Assist the central research team in planning for meetings, meeting venues, accommodation, transport, feeding and other logistics, at the FCT as may be necessary, when the research team members visit or other relevant research-related event occurs
• Works under the supervision of and may perform some assignments independently as discussed and approved by Principal Investigator

Qualifications for research manager

• A graduate in a medically related field is desirable.
• 5 years’ experience conducting research, with 1-2 of those years in a managerial capacity.
• Experience with use of tablets for data collection, knowledge of KoboCollect is desirable.
• Knowledge of quantitative research methodologies
• Highly organized with the ability to multitask and work under time pressure.
• Highly motivated and quantitative-oriented person with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Able to demonstrate excellent attention to detail, good multi-tasking and problem-solving skills, and with ability to comply with strict deadlines.
• Ability to communicate effectively in at least one of the three major Nigerian languages is an advantage.

3. Data manager

Number of positions ONE

Responsibilities for data manager

• Collaborate with CROSDAT research team, and project manager to oversee, organize, and store raw data for the project.
• Create and monitor data collection and storage systems which ensure security and confidentiality of data collected.
• Oversee review of daily data collection to ensure quality, completeness, and accuracy.
• Ensure that data is transmitted daily to the PI and research team via the website.

Qualifications for data manager

• · A university education is desirable.
• · 3-5 years of experience with analysis of data using computer data analysis software, such as Excel, SPSS or STATA
• · Experience creating graphs and visual representations of data in Excel, PowerPoint, and Power BI
• · Highly organized with the ability to multitask and work under time pressure.
• · Highly motivated and quantitative-oriented person with excellent verbal and written communication skills
• · Able to demonstrate excellent attention to detail, good multi-tasking and problem-solving skills, and ability to comply with strict deadlines.

N60, 000 per month
