Ekiti State Government, yesterday, flagged-off a five-day free breast and cervical cancer awareness and screening programme for women across the 16 councils of the state.
According to the government, the programme was to commemorate the 10th year anniversary of the death of the Deputy Governor, Funmi Adunni Olayinka, who died in office of breast cancer in 2013.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony held at the Funmi Adunni Olayinka Diagnostic and Wellness Centre, Ekiti State Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti , the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Oyebanji Filani, said it was unpalatable for people to die of ignorance, saying that prevention is better than treatment.
Filani, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Olusola Gbenga-Igotun, urged women and men to take advantage of the free screening and prevent premature death.
He said: “I want to encourage all women to spread the news about free breast and cervical cancer going on presently in all hospitals in all the local governments in Ekiti”.
Early diagnosis will help in treatments. If they are able to know their status on time it will help to prevent untimely death.”
In his welcome address, the Project Director/Coordinator of the centre, Dr Adebowale Femi Akinwumi, said the centre has strived to provide quality health care services to the populace in terms of general health checks, screening for breast and cervical cancer among women.
