Ekiti State government yesterday said that the state had five new positive COVID-19 cases, which included two health workers and three hospital patients at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti (FETHI).

The state’s Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Mrs. Mojisola Yaya-Kolade, who disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the COVID-19 task force update in Ado-Ekiti, said that the five people were discovered out of the 53 primary contacts of the old woman who was referred to the FETHI from the General Hospital, Omu-Aran, Kwara State.

She said that two nurses and three patients, who were in the same ward with the old woman, contacted the virus. In another development, Osun State government has provided palliatives for students in tertiary institutions in the state and cautioned them against gathering in public.

The state’s Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Co-operatives, Olabode Olaonipekun, who spoke while addressing the students in Osogbo, the state capital, during the presentation of emergency food palliatives to the students in the state yesterday, said it is regrettable that the pandemic forced authorities to close down all educational institutions to prevent the spread of the virus.

He said that the closure of schools should be a strong signal to the students that the pandemic is a serious disaster.

Chairman, National Association of Nigerian Students/Joint Campus Committee (NANS/JCC), Agbogunleri Mikel and President, National Association of Nigerian Students (NAOSS), Teslim Ayowale, who received the food items on behalf of their colleagues, lauded the governor for the gesture and promised their support in the fight against the disease.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has described the efforts of the Ogun State government towards curtailing the coronavirus pandemic as exemplary. It, therefore, gave the assurance that the Federal Government would adequately refund the state for its expenses on the outbreak.

The PTF delegation on COVID-19, led by Executive Director, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Faisal Shuaib, stated this when the team paid a courtesy call on Governor Dapo Abiodun after visiting the Ministry of Health in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, to interface with the state on how its strides could be replicated in other states.

Shauib acknowledged the innovative deployment of technology by the state to fight the pandemic. Responding, the governor, who reiterated that the present administration has effective healthcare delivery on its front burner, said that his government was able to come up with well-structured isolation centres with about four hundred bed spaces spread across the state.
