As part of measures to avert a second wave of COVID-19, medical experts have urged the government to improve surveillance and sustain internal vigilance. They noted that the government has done a good job in the fight against the pandemic, hence the need to sustain the efforts and also increase testing capacity. Chairman, Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board, Professor Akin Osibogun, commended the proactive nature of the government of Nigeria and Lagos State in preventing disastrous consequences of the pandemic.

Osibogun, a public health physician and former Chief Medical Director of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Idi-Araba, made the remarks recently, at an event to mark 2020 LUTH WEEK and to celebrate LUTH’s COVID-19 response team.

Meanwhile, he disclosed that even with the challenges of testing and infrastructure, the nation has recorded a huge success compared to some developed economies. The expert attributed the success to the various steps adopted by the presidential task force and Lagos State. He continued: “When we started screening at the airport, some of the European countries have not started. We were ahead of some countries in terms of response I must say.

“However, People are getting fatigued and relaxed, thinking it is over. We need more intensified awareness and also warn the populace because the virus does mutate into a more virulent form. We need to keep to infection prevention guidelines, wear our masks, keep social distancing, and avoid unnecessary mass gatherings.”

The Chief Medical Director, LUTH, Prof. Chris Bode, said the event was to reward members of the staff who have excelled in their various disciplines and departments through hard work, diligence, and dedication of duty and to provide a platform for stocktaking and planning for the development of the hospital through identifying priority needs and harnessing resources to meet them.

He also noted the need to awaken the consciousness of the corporate bodies to give back to society through donations and partnership.
