Outrage in Yobe: Patient Remanded for Assaulting Female Medical Doctor Over Missed Appointment
A shocking incident at the General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital in Damaturu, Yobe State, has sparked outrage across the medical community. A 40-year-old patient, Ahmed Usman, has been remanded in custody and is set to face trial for allegedly assaulting a female medical doctor, Dr. Fatima Umar Gamsa, during a routine hospital visit.
According to hospital sources, the patient was scheduled for a review with the attending physician. However, when his name was called, he was absent, and the doctor proceeded to attend to the next patient. Later that day, Usman reportedly became agitated, believing he had been deliberately overlooked.
In a disturbing turn of events, he allegedly went outside, cut a branch from a tree, and used it to physically assault Dr. Gamsa. Hospital security intervened immediately, and the matter was reported to the police.
The case has been taken up by the Association of Resident Doctors, Yobe State Branch, and is now before the Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Damaturu. The court has scheduled the hearing for August 19, with the accused currently remanded at the Potiskum Correctional Service.
SP Dungus Abdulkarim confirmed that the case has been handed over to the court for determination. The registry of the Chief Magistrate Court also verified that the hearing has been officially set.
Dr. Gamsa is currently on bed rest leave, recovering from the traumatic incident. Sources close to her revealed that she has been advised to refrain from public statements and allow the legal process to take its course.
Dr. Umar Aji, Chairman of the Association of Resident Doctors in Yobe, stated that the association is closely monitoring the case but will withhold further comments until the court delivers its verdict.
